Erica Smith is truly, “The Hustling Attorney.” Erica was first introduced to Hustle while attending the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law. Taking to the dance from the start, Erica quickly climbed the Hustle Amateur ranks. Less than a year after her formal introduction to the dance, Erica went from competing as a Newcomer to winning 1st place in Advanced Amateur Divisions. With more than 17 Advanced Amateur 1st place wins under her belt, Erica was arguably the Top Female Amateur Hustle Competitor for two years prior to her professional status.  Since becoming a professional competitor, Erica has garnered 1st place in Professional Just Hustle and Invitational Jack & Jill Hustle Divisions across the country.  

In 2007, TV Guide Magazine coined Erica the “Disco-Dancing Lawyer” after she performed a Just Hustle that led her all the way to Vegas on the nationally syndicated television show, “So You Think You Can Dance.” Thereafter, Erica was pictured alongside Shane Sparks in the July 2007 issue of US Weekly.  

In 2010, Erica Smith pioneered and co-choreographed the first ever Hustle Flash Mob. The Hustle Flash Mob Choreography has been viewed more than 41,000 times on YouTube.  The Hustle Flash Mob has garnered the attention of media outlets and has been performed both nationally and internationally.  The International Hustle Dance Association (IHDA) has named Erica Smith a “New Pioneer” for her contribution to Hustle. 

Erica Smith has been an active member of IHDA since 2006.  Erica has served as the IHDA Regional Representative for Washington, DC since 2010 and an IHDA Rules and Regulations Scruinteer since 2011.  In addition, Erica has been directly involved with the implementation of several IHDA Meet and Greets at sanctioned events across the country. 

Erica isn’t just known for her success as a Hustle Competitor, Erica is also known for her success as a West Coast Swing, Hand Dance and Triple Threat Competitor (Hustle/West Coast Swing/Salsa).  Erica has been at the top ranks of West Coast Swing for over two years and currently competes at the All-Star/Professional level. In 2008, Erica earned a coveted US Open Swing Dance title in the Strictly Hand Dance division.  In 2010, Erica Smith captured a World Professional Triple Threat Championship title.  Please click here to view Erica’s highlighted awards and placements in both improvised and choreographed competitions.   

Erica began her dance training at an early age with the Washington School of Ballet. There she studied ballet and modern dancing for almost 10 years. Towards the end of her training, Erica performed with ballet companies from all over the world including, but not limited to, the Joffery Ballet, the Royal Ballet, Dance Theater of Harlem, and the Washington School of Ballet. Having performed dozens of roles over the course of her ballet career, Erica is most proud to have danced the role of Clara in the Washington School of Ballet’s Nutcracker.

In addition to competing, Erica is very passionate about sharing her love of dance with her students.  Erica has received Top Teacher awards at MADjam, Swing Fling, DCSX and Disco America.  In addition, Erica was awarded the 2012, 2013 and 2014 IHDA Top Female Teacher Award.  

Erica has been on the teaching/judging staff at various Hustle and West Coast Swing events such as International Hustle & Salsa Competition, Toronto Open Swing Hustle Championships, Disco America, World Hustle Dance Championship, Puerto Rico Hustle & Salsa Festival, MADjam, Spotlight Dance Celebration, C.A.S.H. Bash, Swing Fling,[email protected], Miami Dance Magic, TRI-State Connection, Virginia State Open, Easterns and Sunshine State Dance Challenge.  Erica currently resides in Silver Spring, MD where she teaches private lessons in Hustle, West Coast Swing and Salsa.   In addition, Erica can be found guest teaching at various venues in the Washington Metropolitan Area.  Erica is a brilliant dancer who guarantees to leave an impression on her audiences and her students.

Erica Smith is a versatile dancer from Silver Spring, MD with extensive backgrounds in ballet, hustle, salsa and west coast swing.  With more than 10 years of ballet experience, Erica performed with ballet companies from all over the world including, but not limited to, the Joffery Ballet, the Royal Ballet, Dance Theater of Harlem, and the Washington School of Ballet prior to beginning her partner dance training.

Erica was first introduced to hustle and salsa in her years at UC Berkeley School of Law, and has been adding her sparkle to the social dance world ever since.  With almost 20 Advanced Amateur 1st place wins under her belt, Erica was arguably the Top Female Amateur Hustle Competitor for two years prior to her professional status.  Since becoming a professional competitor, Erica has garnered 1st place in numerous Professional Just Hustle and Invitational Jack & Jill Hustle divisions across the country.
